Report: Dave Chappelle Writes First Joke in Ten Years

Chappelle is finally ready to give this ‘stand-up thing’ a second go.

From the bush outside of Dave Chappelle’s home in Ohio, I can now confirm that the stand-up comedian wrote a full joke for the first time since 2016. Chappelle jumped around his home in celebration, after breaking his dry spell.

“Oh my god. I’m back,” Chappelle said in his private study, staring at the joke longingly. “I’ve just been spinning my wheels the last few Netflix specials. I would get halfway through writing a joke and then just freeze up. In a panic, if I didn’t scrap the joke, I would just write in big red permit marker, ‘TRANS THING HERE.’ It was a quick fix the first time, but it worked. The people laughed and they kept laughing, so I just kept doing it.”

Things got so rough at one point, Chappelle contemplated walking away from his Netflix deal.

“I thought I was going to have to duck out to South Africa again,” Chappelle said, while framing his new joke and hanging it in his study. “It just got to a point where the people were no longer laughing with me and were instead laughing at me. I felt alone. I felt like I was back in 05’. I don’t like all those feelings.”

Fellow former joke writer, Louis C.K. caught wind of the news and sent his best wishes to Chappelle on social media.

“Wow, Dave. I am super excited for you and can’t wait to see it in your next special,” C.K. wrote from his sticky keyboard. “I’m actually struggling to write jokes myself. It’s been a little bit of an issue, but I’ve offset it by writing a book that you can buy. Go buy Ingram now. Using the code ‘Ingram is good’ at checkout will give you a 2% discount. Congrats again Dave.”

At press time Chappelle struggled through writing a second joke and instinctively reached for his red permit market, but he quickly reconsidered and tossed the marker across the room. The bush I hid in for this story was a Buckeye Willow.
