A24 Opens Screenwriting Competition for Best Adapted Creepypastas

It’s all real, it happened to a guy my cousin knew.

From a bush in New York City, I can now confirm that following the marketing success of A24’s upcoming Backrooms adaptation, the production company has announced a new screenwriting competition for best adapted creepypastas.

“The response from the Backrooms trailer was better than we could’ve ever expected, we had no idea chronically online people would appreciate being represented in cinema,” said A24’s Head of Film, Noah Sacco. “I’m not making any promises, but if the box office numbers mirror our current interest, you may see Jeff the Killer come to the big screen in the near future.”

This opportunity for up-and-coming screenwriters has reinvigorated many young cinephiles in pursuing employment in show business, a famously easy to enter field.

“I grew up reading this stuff on Reddit and 4chan, if there’s anyone who can adapt these green text mini-stories into a movie it’s me,” says Alec Norris, who added to his current screenplay in months. “The slenderman well has run dry but the bottomless pit of creepypastas the internet has to offer is a treasure trove of jumping off points. I’ve already got so many ideas! I can’t wait to fire up Final Draft and stare at the blinking cursor for hours!”

Hollywood film studios have taken notice of this cheap and easy to produce intellectual property, and some have already delved into acquiring other niche internet content to turn into multi-million dollar productions.

“There have been reports of NEON optioning fanfictions and Annapurna Pictures buying up the rights to every top post in the r/AmITheAsshole subreddit,” says industry reporter Terry McMillian. “It’s looking like we are entering a Renaissance of hyper-specific internet culture films that will be sure to alienate any movie-goer over the age of forty.”

At press time, Mojang has greenlit a Herobrine film starring Jack Black as both Steve and the titular Herobrine. The bush I hid in for this story was a spooky Gnocchi Bush.
