Writer with Hollywood Dreams Doesn’t Even Listen to ‘The Town’
Or any showbiz podcasts, for that matter.
From the bushes somewhere in WeHo, I can now confirm that local aspiring screenwriter, Jace Brent, has never listened to an episode of Puck’s ‘The Town with Matthew Belloni.’ I caught up with one of Brent’s seven roommates, West Edmond, who was dumbfounded that Brent had not heard a minute of the best podcast about the business.
“How do you want to be a writer and have never even listened to Matt Belloni,” Edmond said, before handing me headshots in the middle of his makeshift bedroom, which I believe was a living room when the house was built. “If you don’t track the business, you’re not going to know what’s selling and then you’re going to write something that’s never going to sell. I don’t think Jace is cut out for this work.”
Edmond then pitched me his podcast where he and a fellow unemployed actor critique professional actors in movies. He started a diatribe on Paul Dano’s acting in There Will Be Blood before remembering that we were there to talk about his roommate.
“I originally wanted Jace to write me a part in one of his movies, he’s actually a really good writer,” Edmond said, eating an uncrustable he stole from the shared fridge. “I just can’t trust a guy who doesn’t know the biz. He doesn’t know what people want. He might as well be writing in his diary, cause whatever script he’s writing, it ain’t selling. You know who does know what people want? Me. I listen to The Town. I also listen to Scriptnotes, The Writer’s Panel, The Business, Blacklisted, The Screenwriting Life, Write On, Screaming Into the Hollywood Abyss, and every screenwriting podcast hosted by a working writer who stopped seven episodes in, cause they weren’t making money from it. Now, I’ve never sold, let alone written a screenplay, but if I did, it would sell, because I listen to all the pods.”
After disposing of Edmond’s headshots and podcast business cards into a nearby dumpster, I caught up with Matthew Belloni on the set of The Studio for season 2, to ask him about writers who don’t listen to The Town.
“The Town? Oh, the podcast I do when I’m not acting on TV,” Belloni said in a robe, leaning out of his personal trailer. “It’s whatever man. I don’t even listen to that thing.”
At press time Edmond had posted the latest episode of Act Write: Actors on Actors Acting Bad, in which he critiqued the award-winning dog in Good Boy.
